When you are a kid, right?
So I started drawing a cow, and what I found is that a cow is a lot of trouble. A cow is full of hormones and the milk needs to be broken down. I don’t understand why it has to be that way. It was a bit odd to start in cow mode, so I added a few little things, stuff I did to get a feel for the character, to give him the look and character that he has now. And then I started the art. Then I came to realize that I can’t really think of a real cow. So I did a lot of drawing of what I imagined the animal would look like, and I realized that’s how I would sketch a cow. So I wrote a few comic books which I used for my character, and they ended up being more than that. They were like, well, I might have another cow in the future; that’s really what it was in my head.
How does your work on the books compare to the work you have done as a director?
I don’t think about the directing. In terms of doing the art, all I really can think about is just trying to come up with something, and I think that’s what makes the whole thing work. Like any art, I do all the drawing. It doesn’t matter what the story is, if there wasn’t the art, there would just be that story. I did it all.
The books have a lot of people hanging out. What made you think it would be wise to have people hanging around your house with props hanging all over?
I don’t know that it’s been a problem. In general, it’s been fun, and I think that people enjoy working with me. It’s been a lot of fun.
What do you do when you get work on the books? Do you use the time off from superhero movies to make comics?
No, I’m probably going to finish those next month. I have several issues with The Incredible Hulk, then there are a couple other books and then I have a bunch of other things that I don’t want to finish because maybe if I finish them there’s no chance at all I’ll do another comic book book series. So what I’m doing with the characters is just finishing the last page and going back to work. That’s mostly what I do.
