(CNN) An unarmed teenager suffered gunshot wounds after he was shot during a robbery that began when two gunmen were stopped at a convenience store in southwest Atlanta Thursday, according to police and the boy’s father.
Investigators identified the 17-year-old victim as James Taysom, who is still in critical condition at an area hospital, Atlanta police said in a news release.
During a press conference Friday, Atlanta Police Chief George Turner confirmed that the teen had been shot during a robbery that began when two gunmen were stopped at a convenience store in north Atlanta. His parents have not been released from the hospital and have been placed on paid administrative leave. One of the gunmen has been arrested.
The suspect has been identified as 21-year-old Antonio Martin.
“When they got out, they found a young victim with gunshot wounds,” Turner said. “The suspect fled, unfortunately, during the robbery and the victim’s mother and some of the witnesses who saw him fleeing attempted to apprehend him so they could get the money out of the scene.”

According to the police, Martin fired shots into the air to make a distraction. Authorities said that when he fired into the air, the boy was struck in the back.
The young victim was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
A motive behind what law enforcement officials are calling a random shooting is unclear.
“All we know right now is that a 17-year old male victim was shot in the street during that robbery and that the suspect fled the scene,” Cobb County Police Lt. William Bledsoe said. “And we’re working on that.”
