In a perfect world, we’d have the same clothes like today (and our hair would be the same, too). I think this is exactly the point. As you grow up, you learn to dress for the occasion in ways that help you fit in with the culture and fit comfortably into your own body. This is especially true when you are growing up in a place with more options and cultural acceptance than the United States. So, to this day, I never wear clothes that closely resemble American clothing. I make clothing that I like and wear in countries like Chile and Canada because I think it looks fantastic. I don’t wear clothing with logos that might offend someone or anything, and that’s something I don’t think a lot of people in the US would understand.
Where does your inspiration come from?
I don’t know. I always have a strong, natural sense for what’s good to wear, whether it’s pants, t-shirts, or skirts. I’m not a fashionista—I’m a fashion person. I also don’t care for that whole “hipster” thing. I’m a pretty straight-laced person that goes to school for business, and I don’t know what’s trendy. For me, fashion is about function, and fashion has to have substance. If there’s no substance and there’s a lot of ornamentation, then you’re not really wearing clothing, you’re just making it up as you go along. It’s a lot more about personality and how people feel about you than how it looks on your body. I think that really goes for people in the fashion world—they tend to like to look good and style well, and they like seeing their clothes on other people. They’re much less concerned about what their clothes look like on them, and I think it’s that kind of spirit that helps inspire people who, once they get into the business, want to make it work.
Which companies have been major inspirations?
Arya, Banana Republic, Michael Kors, and Yves Saint Laurent all have been big inspirations for me, and I love that YSL has all these amazing women from all over the world wearing their clothes to a very high fashion standard because of that influence—they’re all extremely talented and have a lot of respect to their craft, so they’re very much in my wheelhouse. It’s really cool for me, because I’ve started my own company! So I am actually a part of the fashion industry
