What was the most difficult book to sell?
My novel “Happiness” (a collaboration between one of my sons and a retired author/editor), which was very popular at the time. I tried to get it in three books in a small magazine back then and my editor wouldn’t let me publish it.
What was the easiest book to sell?
My first novel was “Punch and Judy” or “Punch-and-Judy” (it was published in the early 1930s). It was sold in about 70 copies in the magazine.
What was your favorite cover artist?
Herman Goring. The cover for Punch-and-Judy was probably the last in my career and I was lucky enough to work with him.
What was your favorite color?
I used a very yellowish-green. It was my favorite color.
How did you write the book?
I wrote the first edition of the book in 1928. It was only published briefly in 1934 and 1936.
What was your most-anticipated book?
My first novel was probably “Happiness,” which I sold in about 70 copies in the magazine back then.
What was your favorite theme?
It was important that I chose a theme, something that I could not have done in any other form. I wanted readers to be transported in this world, this small world. That’s what I liked.
Did you have fun writing it?
I enjoyed writing it. I got quite frustrated. I did have a little trouble with some of the names (like “The Devil is a Part-Timer” I couldn’t write a nickname. They all had to mean something).
What was your favorite moment in the book?
My favorite moment was when I realized that I was about to die. I thought to myself, “My god, the last days of a man who doesn’t have the patience to finish any work is long and horrible and lonely. Why should I go on?”
Who in your life do you thank for your success?
My wife, whom I married shortly after I quit publishing. She has been a constant encouragement and a great influence on my success.
