The Supreme Court of Russia yesterday announced what would probably be the biggest legal scandal of our time. Justices Antonin Scalia, Elena Kagan, and Samuel Alito were appointed by a Republican-controlled Congress, while President Barack Obama was re-elected by a huge majority of Americans. As usual with judicial nominees, they are more interested in preserving the status quo than in any meaningful commitment to their new role on the bench.
The new law the law allows for the arrest of people at any time for “propaganda for criminal activity by their relatives,” including anyone who owns a television or radio station. This includes “information that could influence public opinion on political issues (such as domestic policies or state politics), that could be interpreted by an unthinking public as a declaration of war, as a public opinion poll, or as a threat of violence. The same would apply to foreign nationals who are suspected of doing propaganda. ”
In addition, the legislation expands the definition of “propaganda” as much as possible. “The Russian Federation is considering a draft bill establishing a new crime in the international criminal code for individuals and organizations in a position to influence or cause the actions in a foreign country, if they disseminate material which could be interpreted as such,” the Russian Ministry of Justice warned.
This could potentially go even further and extend to “advocacy” of terrorism. The statute also says a person is guilty for a “terrorist act” when he “insults and insults” the feelings of another person because of his political opinion.
And that’s all to say nothing of the other, unrelated laws the Kremlin is in the process of implementing in Russia.
And those would be just the tip of the iceberg.
Russian television and radio are already under pressure to change or suspend broadcast programs, because they broadcast extremist propaganda. Even the national parliament is taking this issue
