The construction of plywood is a great example of the use of the term simple for a wide variety of purposes, because it can be produced in many different ways. Plywood can be constructed in many different ways both because it can be cut and shaped, or because it can be constructed by using several sheets that form a composite structure with a solid core and an insulative layer.

Plywood can be ordered assembled using a variety of methods, including conventional “lay-and-plank” methods, which use a standard plywood substrate and a pre-cut cut surface, and “lay-and-slab” methods, which use a slab of plywood pre-cut with a template carved into the edge. Another option is to do it yourself; you can use any type and size of wood you feel you need from common lumber, and in a number of ways.

In general, there are two types of plywood: thin and thick. Thin plywood is the same as traditional thick plywood but doesn’t require a specific thickness. For example, it can be ordered made from a sheet that’s 12 inches wide. For thick plywood, you need a thick substrate sheet that is at least 12 inches wide, typically thicker than that. Thin plywood is sometimes known as “jamb” plywood.

Plywood thickness is also called width and depth. As an example, if you had a 12 inch wide plywood panel of width 4, thickness 1/2 inch, you could get plywood for 3 sheets of thickness 1/4 inch. Since you’re building a model, you probably wouldn’t want every section of the model to be cut out and installed as rigid, since you’re looking for just the appropriate thickness of panel for your needs. But you probably would want some sort of slats or sloped panels between each section or for other joints. In that way, each panel of plywood is slightly different in thickness from the thin and thick ones.
