It’s hard. The hardest part will be listening well, it’s a difficult thing to do and you learn a lot about people when you get to sing. It’s really hard.
Is it difficult to live up to it?
It’s just a different part of the body. You’re not a robot where you’ve got a head and arms and legs – you’re not there to make your whole body a robot. That’s not something that you can fake – you can’t really create that kind of fake personality over time. I feel an obligation to the fans to give them the right kind of persona. I want to make sure they feel the right emotions so I need to be very confident with that. I know a little bit about acting and singing so I know what that’s like but I like to take it slowly and make sure that if you’re a musician it’s something that will be exciting so I can keep people interested and you can stay interested in my music too.
Why did you want to write a new version of the song?
It has so much original material in there and it’s a song that I really feel good about it. It was a real struggle to find the new stuff. I think it’s a lot of people’s favourite song…
Your version is in an odd time signature. Does it annoy anyone?
It’s nice that people have a different time signatures but it doesn’t annoy me because it’s so different from other people. It will be very hard to do that. There is one part I was worried about being different from everyone else’s but I’ve found I can do it and be cool about it.
Does working with the other members of the band affect the way you approach writing?
I think that’s probably one of the most important things; we work together so much so there’s a lot of things we talk about and stuff but the process of making a certain song will not change. It’s all about creating something that’s unique. We’re friends so we can talk about whatever without worrying about whether it’s a good idea or not. I really enjoy it when we’re working together and we have some common ground and it’s good to kind of share that together.
Do you always write the lyrics?
It’s not a secret that I’m not the lyrics guy. Everyone is good with that. I write, sometimes some days I will write down lyrics and try to put it down in an album
