Is violin harder than guitar?

When you play an instrument, the strings are the smallest parts of an instrument with a volume and mass of only about 2.

The vibrations from the strings, like the vibrations from your body, are affected by pressure and stiffness, like any object is, so it is very easy to cause sound. The problem is that these vibrations are very tiny, and to take out the air from them you have to change the volume and mass a great deal. This makes it pretty hard, especially with an instrument that’s meant to be played hard and fast.

The guitar and violin have the same volume, and they are two different things. The violin has a mass of only about 2. But I wouldn’t say, “Faster playing is harder to do than a violin because my violin has less mass.”

Bobby was asking about volume and the violin’s volume. How much mass does it have in relation to the pitch? Is it more like the guitar?

If we take the same vibrato string that we use for guitar, we also use a vibrato knob on guitar to adjust the pitch.

Then when we play that guitar on the violin we move the length of the string, and therefore the vibrato amount to change the pitch. But that’s not going to be a major issue.

Okay, so do you have any idea why the violin strings have a very strong vibrato even though they are only 2% of the volume of the guitar?

It’s a complex problem. But there may be reasons that have nothing to do with the physics of it.

It’s because the vibrations are so small and they are affected by the pressure on the strings. Or is it the way the strings are designed that makes the vibrations strong?

Bobby

There are a lot of things out there to give you the impression that violin strings have much more force. But we don’t think that’s very likely. I mean, the guitar has a much heavier tone that it has to vibrate at.

It also vibrates because they can, because the string is much smaller.

It’s more like the violin which has a much smaller volume. The vibrations are actually much better at vibrating to the same pitch but they have to move more to get the same pressure
