I don’t have any problem with art classes. Although I’m not much of an art kid, I love learning and enjoy learning how to make something awesome; it’s also fun. Also, being able to share with others (even strangers) is something I’m so happy about. However, this might be a big one for those that don’t always have the opportunity to find a full time job.
I’m pretty sure that we’re talking about about $10+ an hour (plus tuition), at least. With tuition or even just a little extra money you’ll be able to pay for travel and travel-related expenses like paying for classes at top colleges or other places. This can be a huge investment, not to mention there are many other factors when making this money decision: how much time you have at home…etc.
What does an art class really cost?
The only real real-world resource for knowing how much a year-long art class is worth is the salary scale you find for art teachers. Here’s a pretty comprehensive infographic that breaks down all the art school salaries.
This should give you a decent starting point on how much a year-long art class is worth in your city. If you’re unsure how much a year-long art course is, there is no need to worry! If you know that you would consider that, you’ll be able to budget the course the way that you think it is suitable for you.
Do some research for yourself and find out what your school is offering. In San Francisco, the class that I attended cost around $5,000 with a $1000 a class cap per instructor. It’s worth noting that the actual cost, even though it’s higher, will depend on the school.
There are obviously some exceptions for certain fields, though. I’m sure people will tell you that being a photographer is the greatest gig on earth, but if you can’t afford to go to a top school, I’m sure you would rather work an assistant style position and live on the street. The best part? You won’t have to worry about paying for housing in the meantime.
So, if you’re looking for some inspiration, I’ll leave you with this:
Do your homework and find out how much you’ll pay. If you don’t know how much you can afford without a lot of debt, do some research. Take advantage of that!
