The US Patent Office on Thursday denied Apple’s new iOS version 6.3 “bluetooth earbuds” a patent for Bluetooth earphones, a development that gives the patent to the company that also owns the technology.
The filing for the patent, titled “Bluetooth Audio Converter & Earphone,” makes for interesting reading:
[W]hether or not an electronic device comprises any type of audio amplifier for converting an electrical signal of the user into a sound waveform comprising an audio signal and a sound source, or for generating electronic signals that are not audio signals and have no sound component, the electronic device can perform a desired action by using the sound source or electronic signal as an output that is transmitted to the user’s body, such as by wire, cable, audio connector, or other system for input/output. The electronic device can further perform a desired action, such as playing a sound stream generated or output from the electronic device, to provide content to a user based on the content, by transmitting the signal from the user’s device to a sound source, such as a speaker or earphone, or by transmitting a signal from the user’s device to the sound source, such as a speaker, earphone, or other system for output/modulation of a sound wave. In particular, the electronic device can perform a desired action by transmitting the audio signal from the user’s device to a sound source, such as a speaker, earphone, or other system for output/modulation of a sound waveform, such as an audio signal. [emphasis added]
The patent covers a device that converts audio into sound. The “electrical signal” in this case could be anything like an iPhone’s headphone jack — the patent describes a transmitter that converts the audio to a waveform, which that can then be used to send data to the headphone jack or some other device. Or, you could simply be a headphone jack user and be able to send data to your phone via the audio jack while your music keeps playing.
