Informal Vehicle Registration Process
When registering your vehicle the Texas Department of Public Safety will ask for proof of insurance (if you do not already have it) and proof of Texas residency. If you have insurance, you may not be given any further instructions about obtaining residency.
Please remember that a vehicle registration certificate can not be used to register a vehicle outside of Texas, but your Texas registration will be issued by the Department of Insurance.
Transmission and Ignition
Do you need a new, transferable transmission?
You do not need a transmission to register a vehicle in Texas. However, if you are not currently using a regular, factory transmission to drive your vehicle, you will need to purchase a new transmission in Texas. Your dealer will provide you with a complete list of transferable-transmission vehicles in Texas. The listing includes many types of vehicles such as cars, trucks, SUVs, motorcycles, bicycles, and ATVs. Vehicles on the list that are currently available for lease should be listed if you wish to lease your vehicle. However, we cannot guarantee that you will receive the transferable vehicle or that you will retain control of it should you choose to drive it.
What is not transferable?
Most transmissions are transferable. This means that you can sell your car to an eligible buyer and have the transmission sent to them when you are ready to sell it.
Other transferable items such as windshield wipers, spare tires, and tires on trailers are not transferrable. However, the TX DOT does not accept transfer documents from foreign countries.
