What I learned
I’d like to thank everyone who participated as a witness to and participant in the investigation on July 11-13. It was a tremendous effort with the help of everyone from people involved in the construction and operations of various pet store complexes to many other individuals in the industry. It was a fantastic opportunity to talk to people that I’d had long conversations with on and off the phone. I was happy to get an email from anyone that wanted me to meet or meet them.
The results: Not much. A good couple of months later, I received a call from one of my colleagues who had been in the industry for 20 years. “You have to be kidding me! It’s like being in a war zone with no one to back you up!”
It became painfully apparent that the problem lay not at a pet store, but rather with both the law enforcement agencies involved and with the pet store industry. Even to this day, the pet store industry refuses to cooperate with the police investigations.
I received another call from another partner in the industry a little more than a year later. He had been involved in an investigation at a pet shop that had been raided, after which no one from the operation would even talk to him about what they had found. When he mentioned this to me a week later, I was surprised. “We are not a war zone!” he responded. “We have been raided and everything has been cleared up and everyone has returned!”
I can only assume he was unaware he was being filmed. Or that someone in the pet store had been caught on tape.
If there’s something that’s been bothering me for a long time, it’s our inability to deal with problems with the law enforcement. We need to understand that there is a problem for the sake of people like us. We may be the guys that do the “good work”, but we’re also often the guys that get the call that something has gone wrong. To this day, I’m still shocked that someone like me is still alive, still active with pet stores in my neighborhood.
I wish you all the best in your pursuit of finding the truth.
