One of the most common questions I am asked about homemade dog treats is about how long they will last. We will discuss the issue in this post as well.
We do not like to talk about recipes being more than a week or two long. Many people have told me that they are only using them twice. I agree though, dogs only need about a week of raw dog food. I find this to be a huge simplification. It is not even true because dogs are sensitive to food.
What if I used homemade dog treats, would they be safe to feed to my pets on raw diets?
Many people may be thinking this, however. This is where we get into the tricky part and you have to figure out what is best for your pets. It can get confusing. Let me explain.
If you are using homemade dog treats, you need to keep in mind that these treats are going to have some bacteria that is on them, which means that some bacteria that you are eating on raw food may also be on your dog’s raw food and in that case raw feeding may become unsafe for your pet. We can talk about that in this post but that is a topic for another day.
So, we do not want these treats to be completely safe for our pets. So, what do we need to do?
We need to look at each ingredient and figure out what bacteria exists on the ingredients and what bacteria will live on the treats and where? Now, we are talking about bacteria that live in your dog’s body and may be on your homemade dog treats. Some may not be active, some may be active to a lesser degree, some may not be active at a great enough potency to make a difference. We do not want to give our pets bacteria containing food that can cause infection for them.
How do I know what bacteria is on the ingredients I purchase? I can find the answers there, here on my page.
If all is well, what if these bacteria on the ingredients are not active bacteria for my pets and there is nothing that can be done to deal with them. I am not going to talk to you about the idea of doing “all of the above” but just let me just state that I do not think that anyone should be doing every thing on raw food or on raw dog food ever.
I have a pet dog, he has a heart murmur. This sounds like a disease but is he on raw diet?
