The U.S. Army Special Operations Command (USASOC) began launching multiple-launch rocket systems for the first time this week with the launch of the Osprey, a high-altitude military aircraft built for amphibious operations. The Osprey is the first military aircraft in six years whose primary mission is not to land or take off. Instead, the military is testing out a new technology that will be integrated into the Osprey’s long-range unmanned variant in order to be able to fly with the highest speed and maneuverability in the sky without being tethered or strapped to a landing platform. The program, which continues as a joint effort between the U.S. Army, the Air Force, the Navy, Lockheed Martin, the Missile Defense Agency, a subsidiary of the British aerospace company BAE Systems, and the U.S. Army Research, Development, and Engineering Command (RDoE), was conceived after a number of crashes in recent years involving helicopters that have been tethered to fixed-wing aircraft carriers. With the new system, the Osprey will be able to take off from ships at a maximum speed of up to 727 mph and a maximum range of 1,200 nautical miles, or about 1,750 miles, with only one pilot, according to the Army.

The Pentagon has long considered its helicopter fleet of CH-53D Chinook helicopters to be too low on capability for the mission of transporting men and equipment onto or off of foreign battlefields, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Somalia, Lebanon, Pakistan and Ukraine.
