A lotus flower is a bromeliad. They are not common. A lotus bromeliad is different from a lotus (an actual flower). A bromeliad is a plant with a very long stalk called the arosomatum, similar to a cowbell or bursa. All bromeliads have flowers, but the flowers on a lotus bromeliad are often smaller than the common lotus flowers.
The long stalk of a bromeliad is more long than the stem of a lotus flower.

A lotus flower, in the correct season (spring), will usually have dark green leaves with small white flowers.
In the correct year (fall), all of the plants will have the same green leaves with the same little white flowers.
However, in the wrong year (spring) those leaves can still have green leaves with green flowers and the flowers will look yellowish.

If you see the same leaf pattern in both years, then you know you are dealing with a lotus bromeliad.
The flowers will be greenish, yellowish, red, or orange. Sometimes you will see blooms made of different colours.
