The short nails are also used for long (short) stringing, but you can’t do it with the ukulele, as the string is too short for that.
Does playing with the ukulele make you feel tired?
Yeah! It definitely causes my legs to get tired, and I feel aching in my joints for as long as 2 or 3 minutes after. This is not an athletic thing, for me.
Is it possible to change your ukulele from string to ukulele?
It is possible, but I had to buy an old ukulele for that. I can choose stringing from my ukulele, but my hands and fingers need to know the ukulele’s keys.
What did you learn about the ukulele?
There is an old saying from Finland: “The ukulele is the piano of the young people.” Well, I did learn some stuff from that. I can play chords like Jóhann Jóhannsson, and I love it. I can think clearly about music! It is like the best piano in the world!
What happened when you found out that you are getting old?
When I am getting old it is quite difficult for me to imagine being playing the ukulele. I know what I want to be doing with my life. I’m not like when I was young. It has been a big challenge for me.
What do you make of all the attention in the media regarding the ukulele?
People talk about it, and I have to say, I have not noticed it that much. But it’s something I enjoy. I have to look at it a bit like an animal, and I think it’s a beautiful instrument. It’s like a bird that is moving to the beat on strings, and it’s a bird I love, not one that I have to keep in a cage.
What has the ukulele inspired you to try again to make music?
What I like to do is to play an instrument. I’m interested in music, so of course I have to try my hand at it. It is also a great opportunity, even though it’s not easy. But I have to find something that I feel is good for me, and good for other people, including myself.
