(A study released earlier this year suggests that they’re still more attractive). In a poll conducted by The Atlantic, a third of respondents (34 percent) said tattoos are a fashion statement, while 31 percent said they were “less stylish.”
Yet tattoo-less cultures have other benefits. When a tattoo is omitted, it’s easier to learn skills, especially those related to work life and self-discipline. It’s much harder to get hurt. A study recently published in The Archives of Sexual Behavior found that when patients were not tattooed, they had a better sex life, had fewer erectile problems and were less likely to use painkillers if they did have a tattoo.
The tattoo, however, has its downsides — and it’s important for us to recognize them.
1. It’s expensive. A tattoo is more expensive than a tattoo is useful — at least when you don’t need one. The price of a typical tattoo ranges from about $2,000 to $10,000 per person. While that may seem significant — especially when you consider the average health-related expense for a person — it’s misleading. For one thing, it’s often a custom tattoo. That means it’s usually more expensive than traditional tattoos, which can cost as little as $50 or as much as $250.
Some tattoos are custom, but not all. For instance, some of the more commonly required tattoos — like a “diet” and “fitness” tattoo — are not required. In the U.S., your average tattoo costs $60, whereas those for people with health problems might run to up to $1,000 or so.
2. It may be uncomfortable. In addition to being potentially costly, having a tattoo that is more uncomfortable can be a pain for some. Most of the time, it’s just the fact that the color isn’t right and the tattoo isn’t right. But as the skin begins to burn, the body’s natural healing processes slow down. When you don’t have a tattoo, it’s often hard to tell it’s even there. Sometimes, it’s hard to see the marks. And if you’re someone who takes medications (like steroids, estrogen or hormone replacement therapies) regularly, you may find a tattoo painful.
3. It’s not safe. Some people choose to have tattoos in the hopes of achieving a body modification. But most people choose to go without a tattoo for a medical reason. The risk of complications from having a
